Henry's Haworthis News
- Spring 2024 -
Spring is right around the corner, and we are excited about some changes that are taking place with our growing operation this year. Last summer, we sold more Haworthia plants than ever, which was a great blessing! Because of space restrictions indoors (our climate does not allow for keeping Haworthia plants outdoors year-round), we unfortunately had to sell 2/3 of our propagation stock last fall as well. Our collection is still around 200 varieties, but we had no choice but to reduce our quantity of each.
Last fall, we finished construction of our greenhouse, which will extend our outdoor growing season by several months. We are also expanding our indoor growing space so that a much larger number of plants can be overwintered safely each year. What does that mean for Henry's Haworthia this year?
Unfortunately, we expect to have much fewer varieties and total plants for sale this year compared to last year. We need to rebuild our propagation stock once again and simply have fewer trays of props available. However, there may be limited quantities of a few varieties that we have never offered before.
Shifting from a mindset of "try to sell all the props we have this year so all the plants will fit inside" to now having plenty of room for the foreseeable future, we are changing our sales paradigm slightly. Instead of adjusting prices based on plants' quality and maturity, we will only be listing our plants when we judge them to be of the highest quality. This was our original vision for Henry's Haworthia anyway. You won't see any scrawny, poorly rooted young props in our shop. As a result, we hope our customers will always be pleasantly surprised by the quality of our plants. That also means we will have fewer plants available, especially this year. Most props need an entire year, maybe two, to truly mature and fill their 2.5" nursery pot. We may start including the age of the props in our listings, just for the fun of it.
